GP Backfire through carb means intake valves aren't closing, not sealing, rusty valve guide or rusty valve. .
Leaky intake valve will blow air backwards through carb creating a very rich fuel mix and run like crap. Check timing, Checks condition of points too.
Bad valves will not seal properly, allowing moisture to get to the spark plug and hard to start with a wet plug. Look at the plug tomorrow morning. See if the plug is wet before starting.
Do a compression test while you are at it.
As long as you are having fun, keep doing what you are doing.
I think you are learning that not all tractors found in the weeds are worthy of saving.
