Could be a safety or child lock that accidently got set. If so, related info should be in the owners manuel (location, how to use, etc.).
If door handle completely free travels (as if nothing is attached to it, feels different than before) than a linkage has come apart, or something broke.
If door has 2 handles, one inside, and one in the front edge of (what would be the door post to front door when closed), try using the other handle. This will get it open, but won't fix it. Not sure if it has 2 handles.
And if door has been opening hard for awhile, sometimes levers that linkages attach to bend over time. Bend to the point it won't trip the latch anymore. Be kind of the same scenario as being broke.
