My folks were teenagers during the 30s, and I thought they had some ideas that seemed odd, but were not so strange considering their experience. They would sometimes open a jar of stewed tomatoes and eat that with bread or toast for lunch. And plain white beans simmered on the stove with a piece of pork hock,served up with some homemade bread fresh out of the oven, was another of my folks favourites. And I still like that too.
