I had a '77 Toyota Celica new (Ford Mustang fastback copy, 5 on the floor, with their 4 cyl. 29R dual OHC engine. It was fired as you say. The problem with that design was that the base current driving the transistor was not strong enough to keep the points clean. Every once in awhile it would stop running. I'd coast to the side of the road, pop the cap and rotor, using a business card, burnish the points, put it back together, hit the starter and be on my way. That was the car that 4 kids tried to tear up and none were able to. Tough little sucker.
