With your old tired battery the contacts were slowly burning each time you started the tractor. Then with the new battery and cold weather they welded together from the cold weather and the extra load. the reason for the not stopping when you quit on the switch. Now you need to either replace the solenoid or try getting the cap loose and turn the bolts to see if they will work. I usually have to replace the solenoid when that happens. As for the starter not meshing with the ring gear. If you have some heavy grease on the shaft where the drive is, it might not sling out fast enough to engage, or it could be due in part to your contact issue.
