A good friend of mine, now deceased was captured, as I recall the story, during the Battle of the Bulge and imprisoned in Germany. He nearly starved as a P O W. Once he said when they were serving the soup he heard a clink of the ladle on something in the soup kettle. He was delighted because he just knew it was a piece of bone, which he could suck for sustenance. It turned out to be a horse tooth. After the war he farmed. He said he earned enough money farming to buy a Ford 8n, but never earned enough after that to buy a good team of mules
