Yes. My grandfather started farming in 1901 with 3 teams of horses and 2 hired men. When the Fordson arrived, he cut down to 2 teams of horses. In 1936, my father purchased a brand new WC Allis Chalmers and cut back to 1 team of horses. The horses stayed with us thru WWII. Partly because of gasoline rationing but also to perform meaningful work on their own. An additional tractor, a new Allis Chalmers WD in 1949, was the last straw for horses on our farm and most others as well. It all followed a natural progression that eventually led to much larger farms.
