Hello EVERGREEN welcome to YT. I personally would suggest a volt meter instead of an ammeter. One wire connects to a power source when the ignition is on and the other grounds, probably a connection to illuminate it when the lights are on. Just web search ..2 inch round 12 volt meter.. When you add an ammeter the wiring you add has to be capable of carrying the amps the Gen or alt puts out and all off your lights. It can be done but quite a bit more complex than the volt meter.
