I spent some more time this afternoon, on the 1300. The 3 point is working well, so I instructed Johnny to work it whenever he's running the tractor. Now that the unload valve is unstuck, exercising it should help it from sticking again.
To replace the ring on the lift piston, we had removed the PTO/4WD shift plate to get the cylinder out. During the process, we had lost the detent spring for the PTO lever (without realizing it). The PTO shift lever was floppy, so I pulled the plate today, and it was, in fact, missing. So, before putting a new one in, I tried fishing for the old one with a telescoping magnet. Murphy's law, that magnet got stuck between the case and the final gear for the front driveshaft. Trying to work it loose, the shaft came apart. So, I drained the oil, and eventually fished it out with a claw tool. Shew. That gave me a good chance to fully check for the missing spring, which was not in the case. So, I filled the case back up, put the cover back on, and installed a new spring.
A 10 minute job became a 2 hour test of patience, but Johnny has a functioning tractor again. And, I've learned a lot. I don't particularily like learning on other people's stuff, but it is what it is.
