The slots are probably put in the stud threads to keep to some one from destroying the casting by screwing the stud in with oil in the hole or some other non compressible medium inside the hole and forming an incredible amount of hydraulic pressure building up in the hole and blow the side out of the casting. I have seen it done before on a small engine. Gene Davis
