I'm with the nothing to shut it down unless it has Murphy switches or runs out of fuel /air or both unless you have a bearing seized on the crank or piston in the cylinder. So now if it is really getting hot it is kind of rare but are you sure the impeller is turning on the water pump or slipping on the shaft not turning up to speed or just not turning. also is the fan belt and pulleys in good shape both can cause the water pump to not turn up to speed like a worn belt will slip and worn pulleys can even flip the belt off if bad enough. Then if you determine it is not the hot option check fuel filters and fuel cap for not venting. Filters first and they might give you an idea if the cap is not venting by watching the flow from the line catching in a pail. Or loosen cap while driving right after it stops loosen and listen for air sucking in.
