The number one enemy to short season haying is time. The longer it takes to mow, condition, ted and rake before baling can make a difference between putting up good dry hay or rained on hay
Travel speed across a field is only one factor to consider, stopping to unplug a sickle bar can equal to a few hundred feet of travel distance, plug up enough and you ve lost a round or more in the field, 2 minutes to change a disc blade versus 10 minutes to replace a section
A used 4 basket tedder isn t much higher than a 2 basket, but it will cover twice the width in order to ted the field in half the time with half as much soil compaction
Same applies to my favorite rolla bar rake versus a V rake
The tedder and rake would be dependent on weather your TO20 or B JD have hydraulic remotes to fold up a tedder or V rake
I ve used a manual fold tedder for years but have never seen a manual fold V rake
With my 9 ft disc mower and tractor gearing I can mow 20 acres in 4 1/2 to 5 hours and ted with a 4 basket tedder in 2 to 2 1/2 hours
All mowing and tedding can be done in one day
Personally I like to mow in the afternoon and ted the next morning giving the hay a little wilt down time over night
