WE HAD OUR 27V IH MOWER MOUNTED ON A FARMALL MODEL M. WE CUT HAY AND MOWED THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD IN 4TH GEAR. YOU HAVE TO KEEP YOUR GROUND SPEED FAST ENOUGH TO KNOCK THE CUT MATERIAL OFF THE BAR. TOO SLOW AND IT WILL PLUG. WE ALWAYS USED SERRATED SICKLE SECTIONS AND LEDGER PLATES. ALWAYS BUILT OUR OWN SICKLES AND REPLACED OUR OWN LEDGER PLATES. THE WERE SMOOTH SICKLE SECTIONS AVAILABLE BUT DAD ALWAYS SAID THE SERRATED WERE BETTER. THE 7 FOOT SICKLE BAR COULD ALSO BE 'tipped' UP OR DOWN FROM THE HORIZONTAL WE KEPT OURS TIPPED BACK 'up' TO KEEP FROM CUTTING IN TO GOPHER MOUNDS SO BAD. NOT A GOOD IDEA TO CUT WITH WET OR MUDDY GOPHER MOUNDS AS THIS WOULD CLOG BETWEEN THE LEDGERPLATES. WHEN WE GOT DONE WE STUCK THE SICKLE BAR IN THE POND AND RAN IT FOR A WHILE. THAT WOULD HELP CLEAD THE DIRT OUT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE LEDGER PLATES. LPTS OF MEMORIES!
