Antique Bill, Tom is right, it depends on the type of alternator you have. Regulated is around 13 to 14 volts. However, if open and unregulated, they can put out around 100 volts or so and I have used them as a sort of emergency generator to run lights etc. Their output is chopped DC and they will run brush motors like in drills, but not an induction (brushless) motor. Put a meter on battery, and it should show 12.6 volts setting and rise to 13 to 14 if alternator puts out. John T in Indiana jmn50@msn.com
