PJ, I had a 1990, same engine. Good truck. No real problems. Be sure to use a Supplamental Coolant Additive. These engines have been known to have cylinder erosion from cavitation if not maintained with CSA even though they are a non sleeved engine. Mine had 3.54 gearing and I could get almost 20 mpg. Never could quite break that mark. I had the E40D tranny. About 15 towing. I have a friend with the 6.9 and 5 speed who gets 20 if he stays out of it. These engines are not a strong as the 'powerstroke' but they do well. ray
