On ocasion I see a Delco 3 wire regulator that will self energize like a one wire regulator. I don't know if this can be relied on to work without fail. The white wire(#1 on alt case) must be connected to the ign side of the switch so it is powered only when the ign switch is on. You need a resistor or diode inline in the wire to prevent backfeed from the alternator to the ign coil.( the alternator will power the coil and engine will not shut down) I like to use a small 2 wire 12V indicator light (that uses an auto dash light bulb) for a resistor. it will lower the backfeed enough to prevent shutdown problems,and will serve as an indicator light to tell you that the alternator is working. It also serves as a warning if you leave the ign on so you don't accidently run your battery down. I just did this conversion on my Moline,Big Mo 400.
