Missed the point. If any welding is going to be done, this is the time to add more metal on three sides of the rod journals & then grind in some more stroke. It's done all the time. Properly done, reliability is not significantly affected. This process will also bring the journal back up to stock size. Just tossing an idea out there as this would be the time to add some stroke instead of wishing later he had when the opportunity was there. Crank failure after rebuilds occur because someone left a stress riser from a substandard machining, too tight/loose clearances or the crank/rod were already metal fatigued prior to "rebuilding".
