This probably a different problem than what you have, but as long as we are talking about Ford 4WD transfer cases. I had a couple of trucks that I lost 4WD on. I think one was an 85 and one an 87 model. They had a New Process 208 transfer case. I kept hearing this "whine" from the transfer case. I checked the transfer case and it turned out the case had developed a hairline crack and leaked all the ATF out. Of course with no fluid that big chain that transfers the power was ruined. It cost more to buy a new chain than what I could get a complete used transfer case from the junkyard.
