most , but not all tractors started off as 6 volt positive ground in the 1940 era. Automotive companies started changing to 12 volt negavite ground in the late 50's. Most companies , including tractor tended to follow the lead. In the mid 70's the alternator was developed and they are all negative ground. That is now the standard. You can rewire an old tractor, but the generator and voltage regulator will need to be changed. The only good reason to have 12 volt negative ground these days is to be common with everything else. Ever see someone jump start a 6 volt positive ground tractor with a 12 volt negative ground truck. Sometimes its not a pretty sight.
