Don, I just got off the phone with one of this country's experts on wood finishing (3 books, videos, TV shows, journals, etc) and he asked me: How much stress will there be on the surface? My Ans: a lot. Unhesitatingly, he thumbed down the oil/diesel fuel and Thompson's as best solutions but recommended 3 coats of spar varnish. It's soft and will abrade but it takes dents, is flexible, won't peel and can be easily restored with sanding and another coat (every 3 years). He's a good friend, generous with his assistance, and has never given anyone bad advice. Go for it!
