DY, Im not exactly sure what you plan to do with that diode circuit, excite and supply (turn on)the alternator's rotating field or what?? Im not sure of its (rotor/field) exact amperage, but its not real large. In order to prevent the alternators 1/R circuit output from back feed energizing an ignition switch, some owners wire a diode in the circuit running from the ignition switch to the small side terminal marked 1 or R on the alternator. If that's what you're doing, a 3 amp diode will probably work, but its a little small for my liking and I would probably use at least a 5 amp or larger just to be on the safer side even if its overkill. However, if your talking about any kind of diode in the stationary stator output circuit which may be 30 to 50 amps or so, that small diode will obviously not work and it sounds like thats not what you intended. So long as the reverse voltage withstand rating is 12 (like the 20 you spoke of), thats fine. John T in Indiana
