I will admit I have never used synthetic oil. It costs too much to change often. The regular oils we have now are a lot better than the oil these tractors were made to run on. In all my engines I use a multi weight, 5-30, or 10-40, or maybe for a long trip in hot summer 20-50. Change often. I have a good gage and can notice a 2 or 3 lbs. drop in pressure at around the 2000 mi area, this is when I change the oil. And filter. I will use my money on frequent oil changes, not synthetic. As for final drives and other gear boxes, well they don't have the cantamination of blow by and such, a less frequent change schedule is fine. Maybe every few years. People are often bad about gearboxes, especially some farmers. I bet some final drives have never been changed. Some I have taken the pans off of have had terrible looking gook in them. It takes a long time for gear oil to turn black and get really thick with sludge at the bottom.
