I ran those old tractors for many years. Very simple,tough and easy to service. Driveline is overbuilt for the hp. If yours is a pre 69 model and the front bearing on the top trans/drop box shaft is out,remember that early models had a weak ball bearing that can be direct replaced with a 2 row roller bearing that ends the problem.
Yes,the engines were the weakest part of the tractor. Early models had a 470 which did not do well. Most were replaced with a 504? 505? or a 555 engine.
