I stand corrected Ken. Your analysis of the dynamics is correct, I believe. Unfortunately for Sam (and as you point out) the end result of the bulb implosion was the same as it would have been for a bulb explosion; the petrol was ignited by the hot filament (or possibly by sparks between the broken bulb electrodes.)
