My Diesel 454 is my favorite little tractor. The problems: Internal clutch for PTO wears and will slip. If that is the only thing wrong, it isn't too bad to fix, 5 gal of tranny fluisd, and a clutch plate kit will do it for under $200. BUT if it is slipping because of a poor hydraulic pump, then you've got a problem. Dealer prices out teh pump in the $1000 range. I have found an aftermarket one for Probably 1/3 that but don't kinow how good they are. If the power steering is weak suspect the hydraulic pump.
Also the parking brake is a royal pain to fix, I am told. Easy to leave on, and it's internal stuff to fix.
Check the brakes, make sure the left and right brake both work.
MIne was a huge step up from my 600 Ford. I do a lot of driveway repairing, gravel work, anmd I love it.
I think pricewise it does sound a litle high. IF it is a dealer make him put it on a dyno and prove the PTO system is solid to your satisfaction. If it is a private party , find a large field and go bush hogging, or find some other way to put the PTO to some serious work.

GOod luck, hope it's a good one!

Today's Featured Article - An Old-Time Tractor Demonstration - by Kim Pratt. Sam was born in rural Kansas in 1926. His dad was a hard-working farmer and the children worked hard everyday to help ends meet. In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership, ... [Read Article]
