Timothy heads are about 1/4 inch in diameter and 2-3 inches long with the seeds all the way around the stem. Very tight together. Reed canary grass generally has a longer head of seeds, and they are arranged more loosely around the stem- sort of like the difference between wheat kernels around the stem versus oats kernels loosely arranged around the stem. Maybe not the best description, but check with a fertilizer plant, seed dealer or county agent for pictures, etc. Timothy is not as tall as reed canary, and less leafy growth as well. Waist high timothy is about the max, but reed canary is likely to go head high, expecially if cut only once a year.
