I got a '98 Chev 4x4 and as far as I can tell the following is symptomatic for this year (and I had/got it all) bad brake rotors (dime sized divots) bad intake manifold gasket (when is an intake maniflold a routine maintenance item?) piston slap when cold. The last one frosts me. It is getting worse and GM don't care if the noise clears up in less than 5 minutes. If it takes longer they will replace the loose piston, but not hone the cylinder and will reinstall the old rings. Check out http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/gmpistonslap for the latest. The pistons are installed loose to improve internal engine friction (better mileage).
