Rod - I've seen those warning stickers, etc. too. But my experience has been as long as you protect (insulate) the ungrounded battery cable from contacting ground, the generator will not be harmed even after many hours of running without a battery installed. I'm not saying I endorse this practice! Only that I've run several Farmall letter series tractors without batteries on several occasions with no harm done whatsoever to the charging system.
