Brush hog without clutch or shear bolt

I have two neighbors with brush hogs just sitting in their fields for years that I'm sure I could get for nearly nothing. However, neither of them has a shear pin or a clutch. Wouldn't a mower like that put me at risk of destroying my PTO?

I have a shear pin mower, and can't avoid the temptation of mowing off trees. Problem is the shear pin breaks all the time.

I'm talking about a 5-6 foot mower on a 55+hp tractor.
