Cub Cadet (1979) engine trouble

The tractor was runing just fine and suddenly the engine slowed like starving for gas. (pulled the choke hoping to draw in more gas but the engine just quit)When restarted it would only run at idle and pop back through the carbarator and muffler. Sounded like it was out of time. The coil, condenser and points were replaced, the valves were checked and clearance set. Adjustments of the points more or less than specified made no difference. the cam push rod checked ok. The carborator was also taken apart and found to be ok, no adjustments made any difference. The weights whiich control the compression release were checked because we have not found these to go bad.
