Coil, resistor hookup HELP ??

When hooking up the resistor on the coil, does it go between the key switch and coil? Or does it go between the coil and Distributor ?? I know this is a simple problem but either way I go with it, the coil will get very warm in just a few seconds with the switch left on. I left it on for about 2 hours on mistake and burned it all up. Iv got it replaced now and would like to get it right and not be replacing burnt parts due to trial & error.
