i don't do any free work for people i don't know. agree to rules up front, like you only not so generous. i agree to do work in stages (about 4 hours worth at a time). if they don't pay for that stage (i get burned for the four hours of work). they know that they can never come back to me for labor or equipment work again ( i also warn them of that up front). i find that the ones that are likely to burn you are also the ones that are most likely to be a pest. so in a way i like to be burned by them. now if i want to give away my labor (to help someone out) i'll have that option when they come to me to pay. so now i can turn down all or some of the pay that we have both agreed on.
