Please don't pout about losing the D19- especially if it was a diesel- they have a reputation for bad heads. The D17 would be much more reliable for you- especially if you are in Northern Minnesota and want a reliable starter for the winters we are famous for. As far as backhoe- hiring it done is not a bad option- then the owner can repair it. The 1850 would be more than big enough for you, but better suited to hang a 3pt backhoe on. My neighbor has one, and the extra tractor weight compare to a D17 is an advantage, although either would be adequate.Trenching for your electrical needs is also a good option, rather than using the backhoe. Updating the septic may require a contractor, rather than doing it yourself- bottom line is, for your stated backhoe needs, I would hire it done. It's always an option to buy the machine, use it, and sell it, but for that stated amount of digging, I'd hire it- you also get the operator's help in laying the lines!
