Paul,I don't belong to mensa but I have worked on the old E4A's. To check the mag, take it off and spin it with a speed wrench. You should get a good blue spark. The mag is a coil that spins inside of a field created by the big horseshoe magnet. The coil has a ground brush at the back and a brush at the front on the cap, this brush takes the power to the center of the cap and the rotor destributes it to the right cyl at the right time. If you got spark once I would clean the brushes first, 6 in the cap and the ground brush at the rear. I assume you know about the spark advance, it moves the cam and changes the timing and at fully retarded will shut off the spark and stop the tractor. If you have weak spark you can get the magnet recharged.
