I used to work with a guy who had problems with wasp and hornet nests that were made in holes in his fields. He finally took care of them this way:

He waited until midnight, when it was cool and the wasps/hornets had gone in for the night. He wrapped a stick with a rag and set it on fire. He then went around to each nest, poured gas on it(admittedly very dangerous), and set each nest on fire. All that was left of each nest by morning was a few ashes.
