Quite a coincidence that this should be posted. Last night just before dark, mowed through some weeds about 6 feet high and was stung in eyebrow by hornet-my first hornet sting ever. Eye swelled almost shut, then subsided some but some swelling spread over most of face. Dull headache and some loss of equilibrium. No tractor driving today. I think that these insects when disturbed are drawn to heat. Have plowed through several yellow jacket nests and they attack the exhaust pipe-not a healthy move. Found small hornet nest at the door to my shop one day that was not there the day before-they buzzed me. Grabbed the aerosol brake parts cleaner as soon as they settled down. Nothing ever killed them faster. Better to do at night when all are at the nest. Years ago, my uncle (recently died at 90) cut his tobacco curing wood into the longest pieces that he could handle and would shove them farther into the furnace as the end in the furnace burned away. Grabbed one such pole and there was a hornet nest on the other end. Stung and infuriated him. Got his automatic shotgun, removed the magazine plug and loaded up with #8 shot. Machine-gunned the hornet nest.

Elliott said while this
