Order the operator's manual from John Deere or other source. Will give you all the lube recommendations. R was the first JD diesel- good lugging tractor for it's time. PTO drive was weak on heavy loads because of it's bevel gear drive. Don't worry about oil color- five minutes after changing, diesel engine oil looks black. Not the best indicator of engine condition. R is a great antique tractor- just enjoy!
