Last summer I decided that I wanted a JD B. My 3 year old son (Drew) is a real JD nut and I have a cousin who collects them and would help with the restoration. O.K. make and model had been decided, now to find one. I keeped checking the swap guides and clasifides and told people I know and work with as far away as 200 miles to keep thier eyes peeled for me. I didn't have a trailer to haul it with but would figure that out later. On my days off Drew and I would ride the back roads and look behind barns and in old fields. You never know right? Well one afternoon we went for a walk and he wanted to go look at an old unstyled A that a neighbor had restored and would display on his lawn. To Drews disapointment the A had been moved and put away behind the house for the fast aproaching winter. "Lets go see it Dad!" I resisted at first but kind of know the old guy (actualy a distant relative) and figured he wouldn't mind. Well sir, next to that A and out of sight from the road was a REAL rough '43 JD B. Seems he had found it years before on an actual rock pile and it was slowly being parted out. This was going to be a real callenge for him but he was going to try and save #144990. It took him all winter to free the engine and did the necessary repairs to the motor. He had to pull it the better part of an afternoon to get it started and it only ran a few minutes before it staled. Not long after that the owner sufferd a stroke and lost interest and the B sat uncovered for four more years. A deal was made and it started up making the 1200 foot pull home. That was 8 months,half a dozen heli-coils, several seals and bearings ect. ect. ago. I painted her last week and in a week or so I'll have her reasembled and back to her old glory. The grills are still a little rough and new rear tires will have to wait till next year (working on a buget here, Drew has a little brother) but I have a couple kids that think thier dad can do anything. I suppose they'll change thier mind about that someday but for now I'm lovin' it. Thanks "B".
