Hi Mark,

It will NOT work either way. The input shaft is on the end closest to the hydraulic openings. That is the end that goes to your steering wheel. The other end is the output shaft that goes to your existing steering gear box.

I installed such a unit on an Oliver 77 last year. It works great.
