One question about the paper between the points method? Every mag I have worked with fires when the points close unlike a battery ign where the coil fires when the points open. Would you not have to slowly turn the engine untill the points close and grip the paper to find the firing point? My best luck has been to use a self powered test light connected to the mag kill terminal. The light will always be on because it grounds through the mag coil primary windings,but will get brighter when the points close because the points have less resistance than the primary winding.
