I Just KNEW someone would take that bait! Don't drive much Do You. My '96 PSD is going to turn 191,000 miles in the next day or two. Your lucky on Your NV4500 because Dudge and some other company Both make kits to replace the shaft and gear that have the problem. Gets expensive too. I haven't had to replace My DMFW in My PSD yet, but it's sitting home in the box waiting for time to R&R it! 27 MPG is pretty good (650 mi./24 gal) I've averaged about 20.1 mpg over the last 5000+ miles running the A/C, running with the windows open on nice days, doing some city driving, running 70-75 on the interstate. That's on an F-250 4X4 Reg. Cab with All Terrain tires. I suppose if I slowed up to 50-55 MPH, had a 2 WD with slick tires I could get 27 mpg too. I think these PSD VS CTD brand wars are SO senseless. There's good trucks & operators out there and then there's guys that can break anything just like there's lemon trucks. Your truck is a "GOOD ONE" just like Mine. I've replaced a couple glow plug relays and a cam position sensor and a waterpump. The new Dodges have a bad fuel lift pump that kills the injection pump. After enough years and miles these weak spots all show up. I totally disagree with You on the NV4500 being the Best Ever transmission. The Ram 3500 I drove a couple years ago from SON's work HAD had a hard life, the body was trashed & beat-up in 99,000 miles, the NV4500 didn't have a single synchro that worked, but the engine ran well. That's been My experience with New Process transmissions, short synchro life. And synchros are expensive to replace! The ZF used in the Ford, and also behind the new Duramax GM's IS a world Class transission manufacturer. They typically supply Mercedes-Benz, BMW, etc. Dodge changed axle suppliers this year from DANA to American Axle, I wouldn't be at all surprised they dump New Venture in the future as well. ANYHOW, These diesel pickups are too darned expensive to abuse anyhow. Treat them right and they'll last a WHOLE long time won't they? Son's now working for a company that has two 2000 Ram 2500 CTD's.. reg. cab 4X4's One cost... NOT Stickered but COST $38,000 and the other one cost $40,000. My PSD stickered for $28,658.XX. I don't think 4 yrs added $10,000 to the price of trucks, so I wonder how ALL these guys end up saying their new CTD's are so much cheaper than the Fords? They all buy them from their Brother-in-laws? I priced out a new Ram 2500's reg. cab & F-350 Super Duty 4X4 reg. cab about a year ago and the Ford WAS about $3000 cheaper at that time. That's outright, no trade.
