Yeah, I was a crew chief on a B-47 6 engine jet bomber in SAC in the middle '50's. It used 600 gallons of water alcohol(100 gallons per engine)for thrust augmentation/more power on take-off. This was burnt all up in about 80-100 seconds and filled the air with black smoke which was pretty impressive to watch but limited visibility caused havoc in "max effort" exercises when we tried to launch multiple aircraft in mimimum time. This system increased thrust on each engine from about 6000 lbs. to 7500 lbs. and you really felt it, of course you really felt it when it was finished too. It was a little scary if you weren't very far off the ground and you were heavily loaded with fuel and those items in the bomb bay. It was a pretty good system though, a lot better than the RATO(rocket assisted take-off)systems used before the water/alcohol.
