You can hook the number 2 wire to the + terminal on the battery - or you can hook the number 2 wire to the BAT terminal on the alternator. In this application, it just won't be that critical. If your battery is low, the alternator will try to put 20+ amps to it - hence you will peg the ammeter. A larger ammeter will cure that problem. Better yet, invest in a voltmeter. When you decrease the RPM of the engine, the alternator will stop charging when it's own RPMs drop below approximately 1200. Ideally, the alternator should be putting out 13.8 volts (yes, my radio test equipment can read to the .8 volt) when it is set correctly. Voltages above 14.2 begin to cook the battery.
