In certain conditions, and with certain attachments, it is possible to use the boom circuit to exert more force on the bucket circuit than it is designed to handle. Circuit reliefs are used to protect the bucket cylinders & hoses from catastrophic failure from this scenario. The circuit relief setting should be several hundred PSI above the main system relief pressure. When they fail, they can drive you nuts if you don't know they are there. Circuit relief valves are also found on backhoes.
