Probably either a broken conductor inside a wire, or a bad connection somewhere. What do your battery cables look like? If they are at all cracked or frayed, replace them. They only cost a few dollars in any auto parts store. While you're there buy a volt/ohm meter (again, only a few dollars) so you can check the other connections.
