Charles, Could be a lot of things. The basic check list starts at fuel, fire, compression. If it does run for a while, and doesn't make odd puffing noises or white smoke, the compression -- headgasket are probably OK -- put compression on the bottom of the list, and/or test it with a compression gauge. Fire, or ignition, could be the culprit. A shorted or intermittant primary wire, a bad condensor, etc. Got an ohm meter to take with you? Like you guess, fuel is probably at the top of the list. Pull the plugs and check them. If they're wet with fuel, you're probably not getting ignition, or way too much fuel -- caused by air restriction or stuck choke plate. You'd see a lot of black smoke when it ran. If they're dry, you're not getting any gas -- float bowl, fuel line, etc. Work backwards from there. There are a lot of possible causes to troubleshoot, hope this gets you headed in the right direction.
