I suggest that you keep these things in mind as you design and build your house- 1. Cutting/splitting fire wood is hard work, especially when one gets older. 2. Insulation is a one-time cost, and will keep doing it's job when we can't. 3. Any heat you can get from the sun is free, after you pay for the equipment. We heat a 1500 sq. ft. house in PEI, Canada with aproximately one and a half cords of wood a year, using an inexpensive forced-air furnace. Here's how. 1. 8" thick walls - R24 insulation. 2. 12" roof insulation - R40 insulation. 3. Slab-on-grade floors - 4" of styrofoam under. 4. Over 200 sq. ft. of windows on the south side - few on the north and west. 5. Roof overhang to exclude sun in summer time. Ed
