Sounds like an inside job to me. who has the stones to steal from a POlice station??? Another cop comes to mind or someone that knows and is trusted by the police. That way IF they were caught in the act, they could say, "I was just moving it for old so and so" etc etc. Most of the things taken from farms etc is someone you know so they could say "I was just borrowing" if they are caught. If they are not caught in the act...they got away with it. My neighbor had two 4 wheelers taken from his shop in broad daylight while he was plowing 1/4 mile away. He did not see who got them but loose lips prevailed and he found out...a trusted friend had took them and sold them in another county. It is too bad you have to lock everything up even if you are in the vicinity.
