That old guy is full of cr@p! Only reason IHC went from mags to distributors is cost - a coil and distributor is cheaper than a mag. As for performance, a mag is actually superior to coil/distributor: Whereas a coil's voltage drops off with increasing RPMs, a mag's voltage output INCREASES with RPM. That's why magnetos continue to be used on high performance engines like aircraft and race cars.
