Twelve volt systems must have a resistor in series with the coil to reduce the current so that it's about the same as it would be in a six volt system. This is usually a high resistance wire, or it may be a standalone resistor.

The exception are coils with internal resistors. If the coil says "No external resistor required" or something like that, it is specifically for a twelve volt system that has no resistor. These are normally only used on vehicles that have been converted from six to 12 volts.
